Political Polarization: Mainstream Media

Chart A: Source

Chart B: Source

Chart A represents how Democrats and Republicans perceive the news media. A major trend is according to from the chart, there are more Democrats than Republicans that care about the news outlet in general, this is because from Chart B, 47% of Democrats are willing to own up to their mistakes compared to 8% of Republicans; 41% Democrats believe the news media are moral compared to 14% of Republicans, and 52% of Democrats want to protect democracy compared to 18% of Republicans. In other words, protecting democracy is free speech, and no censoring, which is known as fake news. On the other hand, a pattern I noticed is 43% of Republicans care about the people on the news outlet they watch on and are willing to protect the free speech based on their news outlet provided for them. Compared to Chart B, this shows the political bias based on each news outlet. News outlets that are placed towards the left, lean more liberal compared to the right which leans towards Conservative. In the middle is the less bias a news outlet is. As seen in the chart, CBS News, Google News, Bloomberg, ABC News, and USA Today are average and are factual instead of being opinionated.

From the patterns shown between Democrats and Republicans, Republicans tend to stay with their biased news outlet because they want to hear more about their political party since it matches up with their political idealization. A possible cause, for this reason, is from Chart B; there are many news outlets which are politically biased, such as the Washington Post compared to the Breitbart. On the other hand, as seen from Chart B, there are not many news outlets that report facts. Fox News leans towards Conservative, compared to CNN. A data I have noticed is 8% of Republican news media are willing to admit their mistakes however 57% of Republicans believe the news media are moral. This data is shockingly close to 59% of Democrats.
