Modeling Ideals: Interest Groups

Interest groups are an organization of people who get together and makes policy-related rules to appeal to the government. They mostly deal with the Congress and are also known as lobbying groups. They donate money and draft bills. They can either put direct pressure on elected officials or shape policy to mobilize voters.

In the United States, where the system is built of democracy and free speech -- they influence the way citizens think and can be deadly in politics. The positives of having interest groups are they represent a majority of what people want and enforce on change; whether it is for the better or worse based on your political ideology. They are like a mini-group with a slogan of "We the People, for the People." except they focus on a particular interest or cause.

There are many types of interest groups, ranging from environmental topics such as a Conservative's stance on global warming does not exist to abortion, such as the Planned Parenthood a Liberal interest group which heavily supports pro-choice.

I decided to learn more about the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), an interest group focused on protecting immigration and citizens rights. They heavily emphasize on parts of the Constitution such as the Due Process and Equal Protection Clause and Bill of Rights.

ACLU's section on Immigration Rights

The ideological perspective of ALCU is far-left liberal. ACLU has a liberal stance on these issues. In the picture above, they use legal rights as a heavy basis for their argument. They oppose having a Conservative government. It is clear they oppose the Trump administration because of their Republican reviews. They start off with a hysterical, tyranny government hypothesis (saying, "what if?"), and ends with, "this is what will happen".

The organization boldly states how they will protect immigrants by "using targeted impact litigation, advocacy, and public outreach." In a way, the diction they use creates an effect that they want to enforce and persuade their audience.

They summarize anti-immigration laws as to be "show me your papers" laws to uphold the impact that has an effect on immigrants. The limitations of having this point of view are when police someone who looks suspicious and are doing illegal trade, police can't file a report on them because they would be labeled as racial suspicion. One bias of this perspective is without the law, some people slip through and break the law by illegally selling/trading drugs.

ALCU proceeds to introduce their Immigrants' Rights Project and provides context for the purpose of their project and how it benefits people. By stating they have been established for more than 25 years, they use ethos as a way to persuade people as they are a trustable and credible organization.

A possible cultural influence on ALCU is free will for the people. The government gives what the people want. ALCU has centered on the western ideal that people are individuals and should be granted civil rights and the government should meet the standards of what they demand in order to make the country better.

By using carefully selected diction, the ACLU presents themselves to be a professional organization advocating for immigration rights.

  1. One thing that is strong is your analysis of the artifact and your wording is great. One way you could make it even stronger is your analysis of interest groups and what they do .
